Tassy Trip Day 10

Day 10 Tasmanian holiday
Left Strahan Village accommodation at 7.30am booked our tickets on the Lady Jane Franklin 11 then we had Breakfast at the Bakery.
We boarded the lady Jane Franklin 11 at 8.30 and got some great photo shots of Strahan from the top deck. As we left the dock it was fine but cloudy. The cruise took us out into Macquarie Harbour and out to the heads where it started raining. We then headed towards the Gordon River past some fish farms. They were feeding them at the time so it was quite interesting to watch. We cruised up the beautiful Gordon River, had a short walk at Heritage Landing then turned around and visited the Sarah Island Penal Settlement. We were very fortunate that the rain stopped as we pulled up at the island. We were on the upper deck front seats right behind the captain. The whole trip we were treated like royalty and we could enjoy fine food and wines as much as we wanted for the entire trip. It was a great trip even with the rain. The cruise ended at 2.30pm
We left Strahan with our car registering a 20026km reading and we headed back to Queenstown as we didn’t get to see much the previous day as it was getting dark when we passed through and we needed to get to Strahan .It is raining in Queens town, I have convinced myself that we were not supposed to see Queenstown. We will have to be happy with our memories of what we did get to see. We drove on to Zeehan and that is where we stayed for the night in a hotel/motel. Keno was very kind to us that night, it payed for our cruise and accommodation. Thanks Mr Keno.

Day 9 Tasmanian Holiday
We left Lake Pedder Chalet at 8.40am – 19644km heading towards the Gordon Dam. The weather forecast is not promising but we remain forever hopeful.
We have had breakfast and are ready to roll. We have had a look around the grounds before leaving for Gordon Dam. Whilst at the Gordon Dam some workers came up in a cable car from the bottom of the dam and asked if we would like to be taken to the bottom of the dam right through the middle. Although they were not supposed to they took cheers and kisses down for a ride, Not me too scared of heights. What a great experience. Stopped at the top of the dam wall and walked along it. she was blessed, it was a great experience.
I think it was at Lawrenny there is a long single lane bridge going over a lake. On the right day in autumn it would be a photographer’s delight with the reflections on the water.
19830, 1.40pm, drove through Tarraleah, took some photos of the Hydro scheme
We stopped at Lake St. Clare at 2.30pm, 19887km. It was raining quite heavily so we decided to drive on to Strahan as we had planned to do the cruise on the Lady Jane Franklin 11 that would be leaving at 8.30am the next morning. We would have loved to see Lake St. Clare but the forecast for tomorrow isn’t much better. From here you enter the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. The rain eased enough that we did the Franklin River nature walk, very nice, and the Nelson Falls, also worth stopping for and getting a bit wet. Guess what, no Platypus. Saw a few Yeti though. Although it was patchy rain we took in the scenery around Queenstown just before dusk. If you weren’t expecting it you would think you had driven onto another planet. We were pushing it a bit to get to Strahan and it was dark when we arrived so we took the first lot of accommodation that we came across. We went to the Hotel for a meal and a few drinks. We couldn’t believe it when we walked to the Hotel there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, just stars. When we came out, pouring rain. Not smart enough to have taken an umbrella with us.

Sullivans Cove

Sullivans Cove

Founded in 1804, Sullivan's Cove is bounded by Hunter Island, Franklin Wharf and the Castray Esplanade. The Elizabeth Street Pier extended into the cove, where you could get an undisrupted view of the skyline at sunrise. I had to don gloves as well to avoid turning into a popsicle, as I was not used to the cold, but I enjoyed the peaceful moment of witnessing the birth of day. Hunter Island housed several old warehouses, one of which was formerly the premises of IXL Jam Factory, founded by Sir Henry Jones. The stretch along Franklin Wharf houses several docks, including Constitution, Waterman and Victoria. In between Constitution, you could find a few fast food outlets perched on upper boat decks. We picked up a plate of scallops dipped in batter, and it was really fresh like nothing we've ever tasted, opposite Captain Mures, which would allow entry with a reservation. One could spend the night sitting along the docks, with a good drink and buddy, against the sernity of the waters mirroring the boats docked. Take a stroll along the wharf in the 7degree breeze (when we were there), you could head down to Salamanca Place for a drink on Friday evenings to join the working class, or some other day if you felt like being able to count the folks at a glance. Hummingbird291, I hope this little writeup is good enough for now. What I remember best about the Cove is very much the sunrise and the undisrupted view.

Snow

Snow

So far this year we have not seen very much snow in the west. Last year we had seen a number of good covers across Mt Murchison and others around us, but only light falls to date this year. Curious as to what others have seen around the State in the way of snow this year? It is a rather chilly day here in Rosebery today and expected to see much more snow on Murchison than there currently is. Snapped this shot during a slight break in the cloud cover a few minutes ago.
