Have seen these birds around here in large numbers, but they are usually very shy and quickly duck for cover with any movement on my part. This is not the best capture, and it was across the road sitting on the power lines at the time. I think it is some form of wattle bird, but not entirely sure, perhaps someone else may be able to inform me?

Hi Mystic,

Looking at your pic at first I thought it was a young Thrush but I'm going to suggest that what I am actually looking at is a Bassian Thrush.

Why, well, the small rounded, layered feathers on the breast which are edged with black scallops. These tend to look spotty from the front or like fish scales when seen from the side, the slightly wide stance in the wings while at rest and the very distinct split and rounded tail tips. But I could be wrong. Posted Image

The Bassian Thrush is Tasmania's only true thrush, it's quite common around the south west and is often seen more on the ground, as this is where it sources most of it's food.

If it is a Bassian Thrush consider yourself very lucky to have captured this photo. Well done.

Thanks Cascade, will have to keep trying for a better shot. They are generally hanging around the smaller shrubby trees, but are very quick to hide the moment they catch sight of anyone.

Wasn't it a Bassian Thrush we saw at Doras? Check out the shots from there and see if there are any similarities.

You are right Shane, methinks. The image you are referring to is here, which is much closer in appearance to other images I have seen on the net, than the critter I shot above
