Hi there.

I was directed to this site by Dave, via the AusPhotography forums. I'm a keen photographer and am planning to visit Tasmania for a holiday later this year. I'm currently in the early planning stages.

I'm in to camping and 4wding with a very capable 4wd, and my wife and I are keen to camp around Tasmania and would like to use an offroad camper trailer. We're intending to bring our own vehicle, but unfortunately we don't own a camper and taking one on the ferry is very dear so I was wondering if anybody knew of anywhere in Tasmania (preferably around Davenport) where you can hire a decent offroad camper? If worst comes to the worst we can use our 'normal' setup (tent and/or swag) but given that we're planning to be moving on every day (with the occasional multi-day stop) we want to investigate the camper option.

Looks like a great site you guys have here and I'm looking forward to looking around it more while I plan the trip.

Hi DP and welcome

I have just been making a few phone calls for you, and it seems that camper trailer hire is difficult. Contacted a few people who did rent them in the past, but have been told repeatedly that they found it was not worth it to continue hiring them. Nobody was able to point me towards anyone who still hires camper trailers. Maybe someone else knows a secret location for you to find one.

When are you planning on coming down and how long you staying?

Called Selby's, not the others. Selby's is a no go.

Johnno's are in Melbourne, I think - I'm not fussed on taking one over due to the cost associated.

Some friends of ours have recently moved to Hobart and I just found out that they own an off-road camper trailer, so it looks like I've had a little win as they've offered to loan it to us for our trip.

We're planning on heading down either the end of October or start of November, for hopefully 3 weeks (this will include travel time to and from Qld as well). Perhaps it will be the last week of Oct and first two of Nov.

Thanks heaps for the help thus far - you've really gone beyond what I expected to receive back by making phone calls for me. It's much appreciated!

Nice bit of luck with the trailer there. Heading down to Hobart once you get off the boat should see you there around lunch time. Two weeks is not a lot of time, this place is much bigger than it appears.

I know, but sadly that is all the time we have available without having to take leave without pay. Unfortunately it's going to dictate how long we spend away. It should be nearer to three weeks by the time we go, but I figure that any time in Tassie, no matter how short, will be better than no time!

Hi dieselpower,

Just dont get stuck in Hobart, regardless of what Hobartians believe, there is life North of Bridgwater and you don't fall off the edge after you've crossed over the bridge.

If you head up the NW and head West of Devonport drop me a PM.
Some, walk in the rain, others, just get wet.

No doubt you will have a great time down here, especially getting into some of the more out of the way spots. You will have a very enjoyable short trip, the magic of Tassie will get under your skin, enter your blood stream, infect your pleasure centres in the brain, and then, like the rest of us, you will become hopelessly addicted and spend most nights dreaming of plans for the return journey. ROFL
