In order to make sure that you see photographs on this, or any website, in their best possible light, your monitor should be reasonably calibrated. If your brightness or contrast settings are out of synch, you will not see the full dynamic range of images. A monitor calibrating tool can be expensive to purchase, though their are a number of aids around to help you get very good settings on your monitor and be able to view photographs better.
In the image below you should be able to see 26 bands ranging from white to black, and through shades of grey. If you cannot see all 26 bands, make adjustments to the monitor brightness and contrast until you can see the difference between each band.
