Just wondering if anyone has any info/photos on the Macquarie Heads camping ground at Strahan or even better if there is a nice free one near by that wouldn't be as crowded?

My fiancée has never seen the west coast so I must instill some of it in her blood so that she too gets the west coast fever from time to time :D

Only been out there once, and it was the campground from hell ROFL. Kids racing around on trail bikes and people everywhere you looked. I believe you can camp in pine forests a little before the campgrounds at the heads.

Also on the west coast there is Trial and Granville Harbours. Trial can be very busy over Xmas and New year, though if you have a 4wd you can go further down the beach to locate more isolated spots.

Out along the Mt Jukes Rd out of Queenstown there is a campground (no facilities) just past Crotty Dam on Lake Burbury. There are also a few spots along the highway between Queenstown and Zeehan, again with no facilities.

My fav campground over here is at Trial Harbour. Nice long beaches, rugged coastline, and no crowds most of the year. It has water and a toilet, though you need to take your own firewood.

You can free camp at the Henty Dunes area. It's not very far to take a run into Strahan 13 klm, Ocean Beach 18klm or Maqarie Heads 21 -25 klm and Zeehan is not to far in the oposite direction 30klm.

The dunes thenselves are a photograhers dream given the right light and time of day. 60ft plus gum trees stick out of the sand in places where they have been over run by the moving sands and the forces of nature create some incredible ripples in the dunes surface. With the Henty Rivers entry to the sea about 4klm from the camping area over the dunes to the beach and then head north.

What was that.... Too many choices..... Thats Tassie for ya.
Some, walk in the rain, others, just get wet.

Hi, I just spent a week down at the Heads camping, and while i agree there was a lot of people around, and i usually prefer more isolated camp sites, it was clean and the area we had was fairly private, we also looked around to find a more private area that we could use next time, and inbetween swan basin and the heads camp ground there are a couple of places that were possible camp sites, one is a few sites along the forestry road (turn left just past swan basin) and look to the left of the road, these are very basic sites that have been carved out by locals, under trees with access to the basin. The other is under the pines just before the heads (off to the right of the road), hope i havent confused you to much, but hopefully helped you out :)

Thanks for the info Nett. (Nice to see you again too :) )

Shane & I took a drive out this way recently and we also noticed a number of tracks coming off the road that looked like promising spots to pitch a tent.

Hmmmm unfortunately my trusty car has put a delay on my journey to the west coast..... Unless anyone can do custom programmed chips for Ford Falcon EL XR6 computers that doesn't cost a fortune and have to get sent from Queensland....... *looks hopeful*

Sounds great Nett.

About 100 yards before the Murchison bridge, heading towards Rosebery, there is a gravel track on the right. Not that rough last time I explored it. This will take you down to a small campsite on the edge of the lake.

We went to Macquarie Heads over the weekend. It is worth the drive from Strahan to have a look, but you would be silly to stay there.

The campground is nice enough, but not the neighbours. Dirt/quad bikes revving all day, smashing up the dunes. We even had some idiot at 4am speeding up the road. Not a very pleasent experience at all- we decided to leave.

Corinna, on the other hand, is a beautiful place. $20 for the ferry is a bit steep, but easier that swimming the care across....
