A 10 minute drive from the centre of Strahan takes you out past the aerodrome and up the gravel road to Macquarie heads. Quite a popular spot with camping area (fees apply) and long beaches, both ocean and river frontage. This is a very popular spot with fisher folk and families.

Shane and I took a run out there the other day, here are a few things that you might (or might not) see around the heads.

Here's some Photo's from the recent Whale Stranding. We were lucky (or unlucky depending on your views) to come across the Whales just after they started beaching themselves, and before the reports were on the news. The Rangers were kind enough to let me take Photo's, which I also sent to them for prosperity.

Thank you both, very much only starting out with Photography. Mine don't compare to some of your imagery.

Welcome aboard from me also, studiojunkyad.

Some really nice shots there and I have to say your eye and your imagery, is just fine.....

In a situation like the one you have captured, I looked at your photo's from the point of view that although the subject is somewhat disheartening, the event is framed by a wonderful sunset and therefore you have created what, would be for me, a very personal, once in a lifetime, indelible memory. Thankyou for sharing it with us.

If only, we could really find out why they do it and put measures in place to eliminate the cause.

Thanks everyone, yes, not a great subject to photograph. We happened along them when we drove down to the beach down Old Lighthouse Road/Track. In a way we were lucky to be there when we were, before it was on the news and before people were being stopped from going down there, and just as the Rangers were arriving. The Photo's were sent along to the Rangers (there were many more, but not post worthy). From what the Rangers told me, the main reason they hang around is to stop poachers stealing the Whales Jaws and Teeth to sell. Absolutely deplorable act and greedy bastards as far as I'm concerned.

I did a little research online, as to the causes of why they beach themselves, and there is no definite answer, but I did come across some articles where some whales had been autopsied, and each one they found traces of Agent Orange. Given what that stuff does too us, who's to say that isn't something that wreaks havoc with the Whales.
