Hi everyone,
I continue to research various areas of Tassie. Can someone give me some info on Zeehan - weather, distance from nearest big town (I assume it would be Burnie), I have also been informed by a real estate agent that both wireless and ADSL broadband are available there. Mystic did say it was a friendly town, so don't need to ask that again! Also, I love wood heating but it appears it would be too expensive to use on a regular basis in the west.

Any input much appreciated!

Jenny

Always with the questions Jenny ROFL

Burnie is about 140km and is the nearest big town to Zeehan, and there is ADSL2+ in Zeehan.

Weather wise, it rains a bit ROFL and can get very windy, otherwise the temps are pretty much the same as the rest of the west, never too hot, and not really too cold. Snow on Mt Zeehan (highest point in Zeehan) is rare, but it does pull the fluffy doona on at times, which is mainly a cloud cover over the mountain letting everyone in town know that it will be a chilly day. Wood can be expensive in the west, though I can't see why that is so. Most people go out and collect their own (permits available from forestry tas)

It is a quiet little town with two pubs, a decent sized supermarket (IGA) and a few other small shops. Population is around 900 and virtually the only local employment is with the mines. Strahan is not too far to drive to with a fair amount of employment in the hospitality industry available there, especially during summer.

Zeehan is also one of the most expensive places to buy real estate.

hope that helps.

Thanks Mystic very much...and guess what? I forgot to ask another question
We have digital TV now, and I read that Tassie isn't getting it till 2013. Does that mean you wouldn't get the digital channels but could still get analogue??

Interesting Zeehan being one of the most expensive places to buy - the prices seem quite reasonable to this Victorian, but you mean in the west of Tassie? It looks to me like the north-west is a little more costly for real estate. Hoping to hire a campervan before too long and come over and take a look around.

Thanks again

I don't think you will get digital channels in the west, at least not for a while, but you should still be able to pick up the analogue. Yep. when I said Zeehan was expensive, I did mean by west coast standards. Prices jumped there a couple of years back when a new estate agent set up shop during a mining boom and convinced everyone they could demand high prices. Prices still seem reasonable by mainland standards though.
