Well my poor old girl (97 El Falcon) is unfortunately costing more than she is worth to keep running *sighs* but I guess that's the way of the world. I arrived in Burnie to discover that the gear box is whining (worse) and the bolts fell out of my CAT so that was the final straw. I have to replace the steering rack too. So time to move on.

I'm looking at an Ford Falcon XR6 AU III. Any tips or tricks, what to look out for etc would be great to know. General comments appreciated.

...buy a Holden...ROFL

I'm not sure I can help too much here Chris, but I suppose I would suggest looking around, both on the net and on foot to get a good price. find reviews of the car and see if there are any faults that maybe a regular thing for it. Apart from that I can't really think of anything right now, but if I do will drop by and let you know.

yep! I'd agree with that!

Ford transmission's are the achilles heel of the falcon! followed by electric's then suspension, the tranny overheats as soon as it comes under pressure then cooks the clutches, ask any taxi driver

motors are strong in the ford, i have heard of 500,000 kilometres but trannys last little above 200,000

if you grab a fraud, I mean Ford then go manual, I work on my own vehicles, always have, I have to with my travelling lifestyle, I have learnt what is reliable and what is not

if you want a truly reliable car then go Toyota!, possibly cressida or avilon!.....last forever with little to no maintenance!

no the gearbox in all 6 cyl fords are identical, some even carry through to the xr8, if you go manual then you wont have a problem!

if you have aftermarket lighting or wiring done of any kind be sure and get it factory certified (a qualified auto electrician should be able to check), and also watch the output of the alternator when fitting and using driving lights, this will cause the battery to run down

Fords are notorious for under performance of the electrics and using too lighter cables, I have seen instrument clusters go up in smoke on earlier models, keep the service up on the drivetrain and suspension, regular maintenance should ensure a good vehicle for a long time!
