I am currently looking to buy a cheap 4x4 (would prefer to be spending under $4000 but could go a little higher for something that was right for us).

Ideally it would be a short wheel base and have the ability to seat at least 4 people. Dual cab ute would also be considered. MUST be manual trans. Prefer 4 cyl, will consider a 6, but an 8 is out of the question. Want something older so that the engine is not overly computerised and capable of being worked on at home should any repairs become necessary. Will consider an unregistered vehicle as long as it has an inspection certificate.

The beast I buy is going to be doing a lot of traveling around Tasmania, and a reasonable amount of off road travel, so I want something that is built solidly, not a tin can. It may also be heading out on a planned run across the Nullarbor next year, so it needs to be in reasonable mechanical condition. I don't mind doing a bit of mechanical work, but do not want to have to spend too much to get something running properly.
