Hi a test post to see if geotagging works with attached pics rather than linked pics.

OK. Geotagging does work. As usual it's a bit clumsy.

This is one way to see the location of the Trowutta Arch photo above in Google Earth, if you can find a better way please let us know!

1) Save the geotagged photo, right click on it and then click "Save". (I usually do it to the desktop and delete the pic after I've seen it's location.)

2) Open the photo in irfanview.

3) Click the "Image" menu and then "Information".

4) Click the "EXIF info*" button at the lower left.

5) Click the "Show in Google Earth" button at the lower right. You can see the GPS co-ords if you scroll down.

6) Google Earth should start up (presuming you've got it on your computer) and zoom to the location of the photo.

7) That's it.

We use a small GPS dongle PhotoTrackr Mini. It's about as big as a cigarette lighter, charges via a USB port and will run for a whole day no problems. It uses the common method of synchronising the time on your camera with the exact GPS time. Then it's a simple (sometimes?) matter of getting a program to write the GPS data for a given time to any photos taken at that time.

Thanks for that TBT. Will have to look into one of these little gadgets, would be interesting to know exactly where images have been shot and how to get back to the spot using GPS :)

Yes, they can be bit of hassle when it comes to actually tagging the photos, but aside from that they work very well. Usually before a trip somewhere I set the cameras to the GPS time (we've got a GPS clock) but the internet time would be good enough. Then it's just a matter of turning it on and putting it in the camera bag and trying to remember to turn it of at night and give it a charge.

Like you mentioned we use it to get an idea of great spots we've been to, so that in a few years time we're not going "where was that spot?"

GPicSync is a good free program that will work with GPX files and NMEA files from just about any GPS. So if your car or handheld GPS can record tracks and you can get to them you can use that to geotag your pics with.
