Here's a Ghost Sign on the side of our new favourite bakery. It's in Battery Point.

Closer view

We can't make much of this Ghost Sign. And (typically) as we drove off I looked at it from an angle and the letters were much clearer.

I'll get another pic on an angle soon and post it here.

Interesting, and obviously a ghost sign. Look forward to seeing what it was :)

Some people hate those South-Easterly weather patterns in Hobart, nothing but low cloud, sea fog and drizzle for days on end. But ghost sign hunters love it!

Here's a better pic from that Bakery in Battery Point, Hobart.

BatteryPointGhostSign.jpg

I was thinking the top line in dark paint said "something, something... Merchant" but obviously it says "Battery Point". Not sure about the second line but the third line is "& Grocery".

There's another sign in larger letters and a light coloured paint that might say "Bakery" (?) on the bottom line.

Nice shot, pity most of it is unreadable, but you are right with the parts that can be read.

It's rare to get a Ghost Sign you can date fairly confidently. But this one is almost certainly 1881AD.

Yes indeed! Well spotted !

Does that lower sign say something "paints"? If so, maybe that's a brand to avoid? :)

Or, thinking about it a bit more, maybe that's the brand to buy if it survives the elements!

Thanks Jon. I reckon it is quality paints...Bradshaws own the mill out the Mt Jukes rd, and I think they owned a lot more...Maybe it was a hardware store??
Next time I am down town I will have a closer look.

Nice old advertising sign in Maffra (Vic). You can see where it was repainted higher up.

Hi Shane, there wasn't much in the way of Ghost Signs in the few rural towns we visited which was very surprising.

This one was spotted by TBT kid D from the top of the Centrepoint carpark in Hobart CBD.
