Been thinking about this commitment for a while now, it's like a puppy isn't it? Not just for Christmas.

So we've committed. We won't reach the excellent photographic standards seen elsewhere in Real Tasmania but we'll do our best. This first set isn't from Tasmania. TBT took a quick trip to the Victorian and SA borders in the last week of the school holidays. Mount Schank was awesome, a huge volcanic cone in a flat plain, well worth a visit and climb to the thin, precarious, wind-blown rim, and maybe crater depths if you have time.

The photos are of something we're never heard of before, a fresh water spring on an ocean beach. The beach springs are east of Piccaninnie Ponds, and you can drive on the beach or walk there. We walked and were amazed to find these springs. Allegedly it takes about 500 years for the underground water to travel from the Mt Gambier region to these springs. The water was limey but quite drinkable and although TBT member Jon managed to sink to his knees in the super-liquidfied sand we got a bottle of spring water to drink later.

Week 2: Back to Hobart. From the moon to the harsh realities of city life.

Keens Curry Long.jpg

Long view of the Keens Curry sign in South Hobart. This advert caused enormous amounts of controversy when it was first laid out. Since then it's been re-arranged to spell out an alleged spy's name in WW1 and various protest slogans. Most recently was "End Polio".

The Cenotaph. This is the second "hidden" tent we know of in Hobart. Tough times call for innovative sleeping arrangements.

Some very cool shots there Jon. I was unaware of the sign, will have to check it out next time I'm in Hobart. Really like the moon shot. That tent sure is hidden well, it really is a shame in this day and age that people have to resort to such sleeping arrangements...
Thanks for sharing Jon :)

ah! mount shank, I know it well, did you go down a bit further to the sinkholes, very popular for divers, there is a low cost campsite there with fantastic ocean views

also the lakes district in the mount itself!

just over the border there are the princess margeret rose caves and a low cost campsite there and another freebie at dry creek

we are only about 700 K's from there you should have dropped in for a cuppa!

good pics!
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those that mind, dont matter and those that matter, dont mind!!!

if you come across someone without a smile,.................. give them one of your's....... and watch it grow!

never be mean with a kind word, ........................you may need one yourself one day!

just as I get used to today along comes tomorrow!

Hi Dave, Mystic and Shane,

The Keens Curry sign is in Sth Hobart and if you drive towards the Brewery on Macquarie st it's on a hill to your left. We'll try to feature this in a "Then and Now" set sometime.

And yes, we did go down south to the sinkholes, in fact we saw so many it was a bit overwhelming, we saw a diver and the mountains of equipment at one. And we stayed at Princess Margaret Rose Caves in the cabins. Really nice old-time wood construction made a small cabin OK with four people. We heard they were the original rangers cabins used when the cave was being developed.

Mt Schank and the fresh-water springs on the beach were the highlights of the trip.

Week 3: Woodvine Nature Reserve.

South East Tasmania. First settled 1861. Take a step back in time without the fences and signposts. The houses are locked up but this is pretty much as it was left, there's still firewood outside the back door of the 1902 house. See http://www.parks.tas...aspx?base=20572

The oven was built in 1902 and used until 1967. It was hot enough if you had to take your hand out of it before 30 sec.

Week 4: Wind and snow and more wind. TBT took a trip down to the Hartz Mountains and it was very nice and snowy. Helped a VW Golf GTi back down the snowy road when their front-wheel drive said "It's too cold". Amazed that they got that far, the snow was about 40 cm deep in places.

Week 5: Some good, some bad. Went for a trip down the Jeffreys Track behind Mt Wellington from the New Norfolk end. Even with the upgrade it was a lot rougher than I remembered (it was a decade or so ago). We chickened out after the vehicle bottomed out twice, and that was taking the best line through the mud/rock holes in the track. Instead got a few pics at a near-by cove and of the Brewery in the pre-day light.

But we're starting out with Jarmans 1837 Map of Hobart. We use this map a lot to find interesting old features of Hobart. Look out for a Then and Now of the convict windmill sometime soon.
