Hi everyone,
I'm going to Tasmania with a friend for 5 days and 4 nights... We'll be going to Hobart on 5th of August... And we'll be back from Launceston on 9th of August... We plan to go around the city in Hobart and go to Port Arthur, Mt Wellington and Richmond village for the first day... Just wonder is there any transport that we can get to Port Arthur from Hobart... As we dont know how to drive.. and we want to save money as well.. Is there any cheapest way to go to Port Arthur from Hobart without joining the tour? Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi cat and welcome to Real Tas. You might want to have a look at this link It is for the main bus service for Tassie, Tassielink, and they seem to go to most places in the state. The link is to their bus pass deals but you should be able to get info about the places they go and prices on that site.

Hi cat123,
First of all welcome to the "Real Tasmania" forum.
You dont say if you arrive in Hobart or Launceston. If its Launceston, there is only one bus to Hobart at 9.30am, bookings are usually essential, tickets are $33.20 one way. So if you don't arrive in time to catch the bus to Hobart then be prepared to have an overnight stay as you'll have to wait untill the next day to catch the bus.
Also you may need to rethink your whole itinerary as without your own transport your going to be hard pushed to even do Port Arthur, let alone all the other things on the first day. Distance and Travel time in Tasmania is very deceptive. Just the basics of your first day for instance, early start 6.00am. Wander Hobart, find breakfast, get to the bus depot for a bus to Port Arthur by 8.30am for the 8.45am bus (make sure ticket was booked in advance.. $23.00 per person, one way). Arrive Port Arthur 10.30am, spend time checking out Port Arthur........ theres no rush... the first bus you can catch back to Hobart is at 4.45pm... Arriving in Hobart at 6.20 pm... Hmm lets see... now for Richmond, already at bus terminal, catch 6.45pm bus for Richmond..arrive at 7.30pm.. $#!^ everything is closed.. Get back on bus at 7.45pm arrive Hobart 8.35pm..... Go to pub... and party.
Next day get up at 7.00am.. catch 8.00am bus to Richmond arrive 8.45am.. Go get breakfast at the Bakery have a look around Richmond then work out what to do next....Ah-ha, Mt Wellington.. Catch bus back to Hobart 11.40am - Arrive in Hobart at 12.25pm. Pick up tour for Mt Wellington 1.30ish.. 2 hour tour of Mt Wellington return to Hobart 3.30ish. 3days and 2 nights already gone.
Sounds a bit negative, but unfortunatly time and the lack of something like a regular every 30 minutes bus transport service around Tassie is going to be your worst enemy and will cause you major grief as it will the many others that will follow in your footsteps.
But nothing is insurmountable... Cut your dreams back a little... do and enjoy what you can this time, then come back again at a later date with a lot more time up your sleeve to really check out Tassie.
Maybe one of our Southern members may be able to offer to help you out one way or another.Good Luck.
