We are a family of 6 - Hubby 44, me 42, son 15, daughter 12, son 5 and another daughter 3.5. We currently live in the Hunter Valley NSW and are moving for a life style change to Tasmania in December 2012.

We have lots of questions that we need answers too, and would love to meet others around the area that we are looking at living in also would love to share our story over the next year with our move.

We are planning on buying land in the Barrington/Lower Barrington area and building.

We currently have a house that is morgaged to the bank over here, after selling we will have about $80,000 - $100,000 to put towards land. We are hoping that we can purchase land and costs with this and then put a shed on it if we can and live in it for one year, or a caravan within the shed. During this year we would then save up a deposit to get a loan to build the house. We are looking a building a Harkaway Kit Home, something we have always wanted to do since we were married 22yrs ago.

We are moving ourselves over as we have decided to only take four pieces of furniture with us that are special to us and re-purchase things over there as we need them. We have two 4wd's (troopy and discovery) that we will be driving over each with a trailer on the back with all our goods on. So this alone will be a challenge off selling everything off and then the fun of re-purchasing when we arrive.

Currently hubby is in a excellent job with high pay of over $100K per year and we know that he will only probably get a job that will pay half or less than half of this in Tassie but it is a lifestyle change for us not the money side, but we do need this still as we don't have much savings. He is a mechanic and air conditioning mechanic by trade and currently works as a locomotive maintainer over here with a very large firm, which does not work in tassie which is ashame :(, so hoping that he will find a job easy. I work at woolworths in nightfill and produce so are hoping to get a transfer if I can.

We both are workers and will be open to any jobs to start with when we arrive and are not choosie so hoping this will help. Even looking at the harvest trail work to start with.

Hubby has already booked in 10 weeks annual leave from December next year when we leave (10-15th) so hoping that he can find a job within this time, then he will give notice, otherwise we may go back into business for our selves or something (have owned our own business before for 14 years) but now really would prefer to work for someone else if we can since we have young children.

We do not know of anyone in Tassie, but all love the quiet country life style over there and want a simpler life, hence the move. We are not greenies as such, but do like looking after our selves and the environment, growing all our own food, savings money by learning to do things new ways, bartering, finding bargins etc...

We love spending time with each other as a family, picnics, drives, outings, gardening, animals, meeting people, working for charities, etc.. so would love to get to know some other families over there before we move if we can and also for the kids to meet other kids and become pen pals in the mean time.

Over here our children attend a private school for the better education that we can get outside the public schools here, but are open to what schools we will send the kids to there. Our oldest son will be 16.5 and will be starting year 10, he is a good learner, quiet and reserve person, but finds school and socializing harder but will always give things a go, He is a hard working in all fields and would like to become a chef when finishing school and doesn't know if he wants to do year 11 and 12 yet. Our oldest daughter will be 14 and will be starting in year 9, she excells at school and makes friends really easy ad would like to become a nurse or doctor when she finishes. We are happy for both of them to attend different schools if they wish, the two youngest we would like to attend the same school. Our son will be 6 and in year 1 and our youngest daughter will be 5 and starting kindy.

Can any one give us some ideas on schools around the Barrington area's, the two oldest are happy to travel to school, they currently catch a bus which takes them 30mins to get to school.

We are also interested in social groups especially for the oldest two. They both attend a church youth group and love it, so that would be something we will be looking for also there. We are of no set religion but are christians in general. Our son is highly into trains and boats, model making and wood work, plus golf. Our daughter is into dance, singing, acting and crafts.

Any help, ideas, suggestions on our move, work there, etc... would really be appreciated.

I am attending to use this forum/topic as a diary of our move on a weekly basis, on what we are doing this end for our move and what we are doing that end for our move to tassie with lots of questions along the way. Would love you to follow and help us on our journey.

We are also coming over for three weeks from the 25th November 2011 to the 15th December 2011 to have a look more into depth on places, schools, councils, work etc.... and for some family time together and would love to drop by and say hi to anyone that would love to meet us.We will be staying at the Port Sorrell Caravan Park whilst we are there camping, come and meet us for dinner one night we would love to have you.

Talk soon. Linda, Gordon - James, Sarah, David and Seanna

Hi to your gang, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for your interesting post, and I love the idea of you using this as a diary of your move, it will make for very interesting reading I am sure, especially for others contemplating the same kind of move.

The Barrington area is very nice indeed, and I have spent a reasonable amount of time visting places around there. When Cascade rears his head from his work I am sure he can provide you with a great deal of the information that you are looking for regarding that part of Tassie.

With your husband's qualifications he should have no real problems finding work, and, if he was interested in working in the mining sector could still look at earning around the same as he is now. Locomotive maintenance, I assume is trains, and we do have a rail network down here, used only for freight. This is operated by TasRail who operate a network that runs from down here in the west coast, up to the north, across the top, and down to Hobart. They may be worth checking out.

Best of luck with everything and I look forward to reading about your journey. :)

Thanks for your reply, love your site and are still going through it all, lots of great information. It would be great if Cascade could give us more information on the area of Barrington and surrounds, the more the better.

Well we are all counting down to our holiday over there soon to do some more exploring, but today 15th October it is overcast here in NSW and we are tacking decluttering and reducing our household items and garage items for our garage sale next Saturday. Hoping to move a lot of stuff as we are wanting to start to paint inside our home for resale. We have moved the two girls into one room so the empty room (well it is full of "stuff"that we are not taking with us) so this will be the first room to completely finish - painting needs to be done, clean the window runners, fans and touch up the wood work. Aiming to have this room finished and one of the boys moved into here before our holiday so when we come back we can start on the next room.

Even tho we aren't moving over until December 2012 we know the time will fly so need to get onto things as we are wanting to put our house on the market in September.

Hubby would be happy to work in the mines again, the money side is important to be able to pay the bills but we want more the lifestyle of simple and happy instead, as long as the bills are meet and a little bit over we will be happy.

Going to get his resume up to date before we come over and go and visit some employment agencies to see what jobs they think might be available to him, does any one know any good ones to go and see for work up around the Devonport - Burnie areas.

Anyway off to mow the lawns first, have a great day.Posted Image

I have also been trying to upload a picture of our selves but it keeps coming back with it is too large, any one put me in theright direction to make it fit, not computer minded at all.
