Blotched Blue-tongues are the biggest lizard found in Tasmania. They reach about 30 cm in length with the tail being 12-15 cm long. They have a stocky body with short legs.

They like to eat flowers, fungi, snails and strawberries. They also are partial to tinned cat and dog food.

The mating season is October-november and between 1 and 15 lizards are born in early summer. They live mainly in the North and east of the state up to an altitude of 740 metres.

This little guy was sheltering in our awning when we were camped at Doras Point, near St Helens, on the North east Coast of Tasmania.

At the child care centre one time we heard a noise in the office we went out to look and a bluey had come to visit us he was quite happy to stay in the office took us about 10 minutes to get him out we had to put him in a box in the end and i took him up the hill away from the centre i didnt want him to get run over.

This is the unfortunate after-effects of what dogs can do to a Bluey.

Unfortunately not......this poor guy has undergone surgery today and has more flesh and vertebrae removed. Enough skin was left behind after surgery to create a envelope style flap that has been stitched.

The cylindrical white part hanging out on both sides is hemipenes (penises) that have also been trimmed. Hopefully he will live a full (if not somewhat spoilt) life but will never have his tail or possibly be able to mate.

Thanks for the extra info.. though I think I would have preferred a happy ever after story sad.gif That's quite sad. I have always liked a blue tongue hanging around the garden, and always felt quite angry at people who allow dogs to run free, especially in many of the campgrounds we have visited.

Oh that poor lizard!
We found one in our compost bin once! I don't know how it got in - must have dug its way in through a very small hole..... A while later I found it had shed its skin in there! Adding to our compost biggrin.gif
I hope the next tenants who moved in didnt have dogs sad.gif

Sounds good Cascade. As you have the great idea, how about you kick it off in the photographic games section ????? Set a few basic parameters to follow and throw in a photo.

My lizard was retreating back into the undergrowth after I disturbed it warming in my driveway.
