The Brushtail Possum is common throughout Tasmania. It is a large possum which is about the same size as a domestic cat, and sometimes bigger. It has a pointed face, pinkish coloured nose and large ears, and of course a black bushy tail. The Tasmanian species comes in three colours, silver grey, black and gold, and shades in between. The gold ones are rare and they are only found in Tasmania. Their fur is thicker than their counterparts on the mainland.

They prefer to live in forests where there nest in trees during the day because they are nocturnal. When living near humans they will invade roofs because it is dark and warm. They are mostly a solitary animal but will share with other possums if their range overlaps or there are a lot of other possums in the area.

Their preferred food is leaves and shrubs but they also like succulent herbs and grasses. They will sometimes scavenge meat or fat. People also feed them fruit and vegetables such as apples and carrots and scraps.

Breeding in Tasmania happens in Autumn. One baby is born about two and a half weeks after mating and stays in the pouch for about 4 and a half months. They spend a further 2 months riding on their mothers backs before they are weaned. The females will mate every year after they turn one.

Their main predators are owls and Tasmanian devils and man. A possum, if lucky, will live to about 11 years of age.

Because they are arboreal, they live in trees, they have very long claws. Watch out for them, they will do a lot of damage if they scratch you.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those that mind, dont matter and those that matter, dont mind!!!

if you come across someone without a smile,.................. give them one of your's....... and watch it grow!

never be mean with a kind word, ........................you may need one yourself one day!

just as I get used to today along comes tomorrow!

Nice shot, Cascade... your southern possums are a lot darker than our northern ringtails.
