One of our most valued members, Tassie Sim, is heading to the west coast for a weekend around the end of March. Margie & I will be kidnapping her, bundling the body into our trusty Jessica and heading out to explore some of the west coast with two nights of camping and many miles of travel through some of the states most beautiful (and not so beautiful) parts.
Sim does not have any experience of the wild west, and we really hope to be able to show her enough of the diversity of our little corner, with loads of photo opportunities along the way.
We have been thinking about various options, and so far, the details below seems to make maximum use of the time. Sim wants to see Strahan, yes, I know, the rest of the west coast clan are shaking their heads and wondering why, but we have to make allowances for the northern folk and indulge them a little. Apart from that, she just wants to experience this area we love and rave about so much here.
This map shows the route we are currently considering. We have from about 10am on the Friday until sometime Sunday afternoon, when she must head back to the smog of Launceston. Hopefully some of our other west coasters might be able to make suggestions about places to go.
We start at Rosebery, head north over Mt Black, past Lake Rosebery & Tullah before heading over towards Reece Dam. With any luck the spillway will be operating and give us some spectacular water action. The road between Tullah & Reece gives some great landscape photo opportunities, and we will no doubt be stopping frequently. We may even give consideration to removing the ropes and gag before we land in this section.
From there we continue on west, stopping briefly at Heemskirk Falls before going down to Trial Harbour where we camp on night one.
Leaving Trial Harbour reasonably early, (allowing chance to wake up, eat breakfast, wander a little etc), we head to zeehan where we get to see the delightful beaming faces of the clan as we quickly drop in for a visit and wake them up. Coffee orders all round will hopefully be filled with minimal grumbling and muttering about mornings and the pitfalls of greeting such hours of the day.
From there we go down to Strahan, stopping at various rivers along the way and possibly the inland beach just outside of Zeehan at the old smelter. At Strahan we will do the Hogarth Falls photo opportunity, maybe look around the shops for a bit (gotta remember we will have one of those tourist type people with us here), explore a bit around the waterfront then head out to Macquarie Heads. This is the first option for camping on the second night, though not my preference.
From Strahan we head to Queenstown and over Mt Lyell, stopping at the Iron Blow open cut for a few shots, then down to Lake Burbury. Option two for the 2nd night camp. (My preference because i have wanted to spend a night here to get early morning light on the rocky cliffs beside the lake).
Leaving there at a reasonably early point allows us to head back through Queenstown and towards Zeehan. A short stop at the Henty Glacial Moraine, before heading up the Lake Plimsoll road and through the Tyndall Ranges. Loads of great photo opportunities along this road.
If we camp at Burbury we shoulda rrive back at Rosebery with enough time to take a quick run down the highway to take the short scenic forest drive, and maybe even the abandoned Tasmanian Mineral Extractions site before returning home and sendiong Sim packing back to the northern netherlands.
A lot of country in a short time, but easily managed as long as we are flexible I think.
Would appreciate the input of others????
