There is nothing quite like them is there ?

To see a Lighthouse standing tall and proud protecting all at sea from the storms and dangers lurking out of sight , a beacon of light protecting and warning giving safe passage to our sailors of the sea's .

OK So I am being slightly dramatic or am I ?
I wonder how many lives have been saved due to the light shining brightly from a lighthouse on the coastline of Tasmania.

I was looking through our images and found the following Lighthouse images.

Eddystone Point

Rocky Cape

Hells Gates

Macquaire Harbour

The last one is not on the list above. It is situated inside Macquarie Harbour, not too far from the Hells gates Lighthouse.

Hi Margie , I wonder why the Macquarie one isnt on the list , I was thinking maybe because its a lead light but its classed as a lighthouse on a few websites about Strauhan so who knows its a lovely little lighthouse isnt it ,

Heres a couple I have smile.gif

Eddystone Point Lighthouse, East Coast
Built 1889
This is a very tall lighthouse that isnt easy to take a photo of with out running out of room to get it all in frame
Eddison_Lighthouse__East_Coast_Tasmania.jpg

Entrance Island Lighthouse, West Coast also called Hells Gate Lighthouse
Built 1892
I had been looking forward to seeing this lighthouse for quite sometime and I wasnt disapointed at all it stands beautifully out at the entrance to Hells Gates

I found a few more lighthouses to add to my list

Mersey Bluff Lighthouse, North Coast
Built 1889
This is a beautiful Lighthouse with its stripes running vertical instead of Horizontal and because of that is classed as very unusual

Rocky Cape Lighthouse, North Coast
Built 1968
Well I must admit to me this didnt even look like a lighthouse its very short and stumpy in apearance Not at all like the lighthouses i amused to seeing on the North coast of Tasmania

Low Head Lighthouse, North Coast
Built 1833
The Low Head lighthouse is so far my favorite Lighthouse and one of my favorite places to go and spend some time taking photos

A couple more from me

Table Cape Lighthouse, North Coast
Built 1888
I have better ones I'll find later of this lighthouse somewhere on a disk but for now this will have to do. This was of course taken in Tulip season

Bonnet Lighthouse, West Coast
Built 1892
This little lighthouse had lovely reflections across the water coming to us on the beach where we were standing
Bonnet_Island_Lighthouse.jpg

Cape Sorell Lighthouse, West Coast
Built 1899
I must admit this isnt a very good lighthouse shot , but I remebered when I was with Anna and Margie that when we stopped at the lookout on the way to Strauhan and saw the Henty dunes we could also see a lighthouse , so I went thru my photos and there it was a very blurry but not the less photo of Cape Sorell lighthouse

Another shot of Mersey Bluff lighthouse to share. It's a good "proper" lighthouse, the way they are supposed to look.

I deleted my old photos of Cape Tourville lighthouse, but I'll reupload when I get a chance. The amount of lighthouse spotters is amazing - we used to get them in all the time to Freycinet, determined to collect the whole set...although I daresay they were almost always a tad disappointed by Cape Tourville: great location, bit of an average lighthouse smile.gif

Round Hill Point lighthouse was always called "Blinking Billy" by my late grandfather, not sure if the name was particular to this lighthouse or just a common nickname (which would be understandable). Does anybody know?

Not sure if this is the same lighthouse. The One Tree Point lighthouse has a plaque attached that reads :

QUOTE
One Tree Point Light
- Blinking Billy Lighthouse -

This lighthouse was maintained as an aid to navigation by the Marine Board of Hobart from 1900 until 1955 and was preserved as a landmark through the efforts of the late Sir Geoffry Walch.

On February 4 1975 the Marine Board of Hobart transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the Hobart City Council for subsequent leasing to the Maritime Museum of Tasmania.

Which suggests it is an old local name for the lighthouse.

These lighthouses are beautiful. Thanks for all the pictures Margie, tassiesim and 1919 (sorry I admit I was a little lazy to spell dat) We don't have that many, much less to name. The shot tower is not a lighthouse, right?

The shot tower is not a lighthouse but a tower used to drop molten lead drops into water to force it to form into the shape of balls to be used as shot pellets.

We are just back from our Tassy trip and in time will tell all. This post caught my eye as we saw a lot of lighthouses while we were there but the most memorable was at Low Head.We ended up staying in the keepers house. Yes about 10m from the lighthouse. Fully self contained with a nice log fire. Even had our own fairy penguin viewing. Will post a few photos when I get time and work out how.

Sounds like you had a great time, and exceptionally lucky to have your own private penguins. Looking forward to reading your tales and seeing the pics. For a bit of help in adding photo's into your posts, this post here might be of some assistance for you. If you have any trouble, or need further help, contact myself or Margie.

G'day,

There is a third Light on King Island (Stokes Point).

This is located on the southern end of the Island, on a very rough road. Since rental vehicles are prohibited from travelling on that road very few non-residents will have seen it. (Being a non-resident I have not seen it).

While away on my last camping trip I was lucky enough to see another Lighthouse to add to my collection I must admit i have seen far more interesting and beautiful Lighthouses but as long as it does it's job and protects people thats all that matters really isnt it,
The views from this lighthouse were just stunning and worth the trip on there own .

"Go for a drive up to the Lighthouse at Cape Tourville and see Sleepy Bay from above, look in to Wineglass Bay and up the East Coast to Bicheno. Well worth the drive (about 15 minutes from Coles Bay through the National Park). Stop on the way and walk into Sleepy Bay and wonder at the crystal clear blue water of the Tasman Sea." exert from http://www.colesbay.com.au/activities.php?id=6
