This walk is located on the Lyell Highway (A10) between the Franklin and Collingwood rivers. It is well signposted and easy to locate.
Well worth the stop, most especially on a clear day. If you are heading west and notice clear views into the valley at Surprise Valley (also well signposted) then definitely make the stop at Donaghys and trek up to the lookout. This area is often enclosed in mist and low cloud, which will dramatically reduce the view from the lookout, though if you are lucky enough to find clear conditions, it is spectacular.
The walk is about a mile and a half, and it is uphill all the way. Not steep, and easily managed by any fitness level, though there is no wheelchair access and due to steep drops at the side of the path at times, keep a close eye on children.
You start out on a wide gravel path fringed with thick scrub, mostly Ti Tree and Eucalypt. After a short distance the path turns to the right and you are led through a moist rainforest for the next stage of your climb.
If you are observant through this section of the path you will notice an incredible diverse array of fungus and mushrooms growing. We found quite a number that we had not seen elsewhere and will add those to the mushroom thread once we have the images processed.
Eventually you come out of the rainforest and back into more Ti Tree as the path takes you along the top of a narrow ridge. Here you will catch glimpses of the scene unfoldiong to the north. Not too much further along you climb the steps to a viewing platform pershed on top of the ridge line and the whole scene unfolds. There are spectacular views 360 degrees around you over the wilderness of the World Heritage Area. Definitely making the walk worthwhile.
A couple of shots looking N/NE and S/SW are below.
