Nelson Falls is located a couple of kilometers inside the western fringe of the World Heritage Area. It is a short 20 minute return walk to the falls. It can be chilly and wet so I would suggest taking warm waterproof clothing and shoes on this walk.

There are many informative signs along the track telling you about the geology, plants and animals in the area as well as what was here in the past.

The path is a combination of gravel and boardwalk. Sometimes it can be slippery and a bit wet under foot.

Along most of the track you will be walking next to Nelson Creek. There are many opportunities to get some photos along the way. There is a diversion, off the main track, which goes right next to the creek showing it flowing along a rocky bed with ferns and other vegetation.

You will see lots of different plants and fungi. There are a lot of animal tracks along the way also, so it is possible to see some animals which live in the area as well. We heard many different types of birds but didn?t see any.

When you reach the falls proper there are 3 viewing areas. One is down the stream a little way, this one offers a nice view of the falls from front on and there is less spray here so it is good for getting images. The others are closer, offering good opportunities for some beautiful shots as well.

I would recommend this walk for everyone. Not sure if you could take a wheelchair down there. The walk has beautiful scenery and is informative at the same time. It is a really cool way to stretch your legs after a long drive.

Enjoy!!!

I have only been into photography since June 2005. There are so many places I have not been to as yet. Trying to work around work and other committments there just isn't enough hours in the day. But one day soon I hope I aim to take some time off and head out to different places around Tassie to get some shots.

Great photos, Shane. Hope you don't mind, but thought I'd add my favourite fungi shot from my trip to Nelson Falls:

And a shot of three developmental stages of Hard Water Fern fronds (from red to dark green):

Love the sprinkling of Leatherwood blossom petals.

Very nice shots Natalie. There is indeed much more to see along that walk than just the falls at the end. Amazed when I see people speed walking through there.

yep like Anna I was surprised when I was basically "pushed" out of the way by tourists trying to race around the boardwalk, they were talking really loud and stomping their feet, they scared everything for meters off the path giving us no chance to see the little birds and lizards that abound in these areas, I prefer to "sit and watch" surprising how many little "things" become apparent when we take the time to just stay still

Could not agree with that thought more Dave. I have spent many an enjoyable hour blankly staring at ground in front of my perch, just observing the myriad of small critters, ants, spiders, and such as they do what they do. And that is even before I start drinking LMAO.gif

Mystic and I went for a wander along this track this morning. It was absolutely beautiful. It has to be my favourite waterfall in all of Tassie. After the little bit of rain we have had lately there was a bit of water going over the falls, making for coll shots.

The Nelson Falls track makes for a great rest stop before coming into Queenstown. It is quite close to home for me, so one of those places I like going back to, usually to hunt for mushrooms, but didn't see any yesterday unfortunately.

I didn't take a wide angle lens with me, and had thought my 50mm would pick up most of the falls. Was I ever wrong. This shot took 28 frames to capture the full falls.
