Hello for the first time. We are a young (well middle aged) family from the Sunshine Coast Qld (Please don't think rich) We bought a run down hand built stone and timber house on small acerage and have spent the past 5yrs making it livable and putting in gardens. We raise our own pigs, some of which were raised in the house, that is in the lounge room, ran our own cows had a horse named Jack who liked to watch tv with his head trough the window. We have our girls (chickens).
On our small patch of heaven live Jay, myself our 20mth beautifull girl Jess and in his oun self contained studio is Jay 's dad Rob and brother adam
Rob has been suffering from adult diabetes for the last 3-4yrs and now suffers leg swelling and ulsers he's near 70.
Jay and I have been to tassie twice and on the second trip took pop who fell in love with the island straight away.
My question is we are looking at moving us all over there as the cooler weather will help with the swelling in pops legs, while providing the family with home, school, hospital & close community.such as we have in Pomona Qld without the heat and humidity.
Ideas would be greatly appreciated - Levendale, huonville, mole creek, ect
again happy to be here would Love to be there.Jay and Ton

Hi Jay and Ton,
We live in the Hobart area but have travelled Tassie extensively. Personally, I would avoid the drought areas and Levendale is/was in drought, at least until the recent rains. Have a look at Meander - C167 off A5 (use Google maps or Google Earth), pretty breath-taking scenery and a nice little primary school and not far from Deloraine. Gunns Plains is also brilliant. In the south, the Huon are is fantastic. Got to get back to work now...

Hi Jay & Ton, and welcome. Some good advice from Tony above. Good luck with your search. The area around Deloraine/ mole creek is very nice, and you may like to look at some of the small communities around the Derby area, just south east of Launceston. There are also plenty of opportunities in the huon valley area.
Having just returned from a run through the derwent valley, midlands, and parts of the east coast, it is all looking quite green around the state right now, which could be temporary, as many areas have been suffering under drought until recently. Talk to locals about rainfall during recent years to get a better idea than appearances may present before making any final decisions.

Thank you everyone for you thoughts on our plight.
Still learning how to do new posts on this site and at 10pm after work can seem alittle much, so sorry about the extended wait.
are Hospitals and schools up to scratch as I will be frequanting these places alot. Work is also an interest, we are willing to change it up and get into all sorts, Jayson is in glass and ally construction on commercial projects and i work in woolies and have done so for the last 15yrs, as department manager in most areas of the store but have also picked fruit around the Noosa area.
Theres soooooo much to think about when you move with aging parents and young children, 3 years ago we would of moved with out a second thought.
Any and all info good or bad is welcome so we can make some sort of informed move.

Our health system is in a mess, like most other places, but as long as you are near Hobart or the north coast it is adequate. In places like Rosbery (where our hospital was recently closed) there are times when the only way in or out for a medical emerhency would be by chopper.
The aged population here is starting to become a major concern as we are developing a population in need of aged care services, so the hand of the govt couold be forced to expand the facilities and services here quite rapidly in coming years.
Schools are currently undergoing major changes, with a lot of schools being amalgamated, and the education system is a bit up in the air right now. It was not functioning very well previously, and who knows what will happen with the changes afoot. It could not really get any worse, that's for sure.
The construction industry seems to have a constant need for experienced people, though on the commercial side I am not too sure about the level of development happening. The current economic climate is wreaking havoc everywhere it seems, though perhaps Tassie is fairing a little better than most mainland states.
Employment around the cities is there though.
Probably not the things you wanted to hear.

Hi there Jay an Ton, well if you're mad enough to choose Tassie over Queensland, you'd be nuts not to consider Deloraine and it's surrounds, which include Meander, Golden Valley, Mole Creek etc.
Call me biased but Deloraine has the lot! Schools, hospital, an active arts community, great geography and a unique social vibrancy that you'll just love... I do. Coming from overseas as many of Deloraines citizens do; you'll find us an eclectic, friendly bunch, who actually make eye-contact and smile at people. We have loggers and greenies drinking at the same pub and you can catch trout in the Meander river that runs through the centre of town. We have a progressive council - never thought I'd hear myself saying such a thing but recently things have improved big time. The high school is the only uncertainty... 6 years ago it was fantistic but a bad choice of principal and the loss of 2 brilliant teachers in the one year, means that we've got some ground to recover. Though the primary school is excellent and the Meander Primary school is one of the best in the state. Also the Hagley Farm school is really special. There is a school bus service for Deloraine and Launceston and Devonport, though the extra 2 hours the kids have to give up to school in those towns due to travel is a big ask.
If you are at all arty, alternative or just love country life; if your heart's set on Tasmania, then drop into the Deloraine Deli for a coffee and a chat.
There's a couple of steel fabricators, a window manufacturer and a Woolies here too.
Mole Creek is very beautiful but VERY cold.
