Hi All,

Thought I better get off my slack behind and get my first post up seeing as it has been over 4 weeks since I joined, but hey better late than never (sometimes wink.gif )

I initially found this site while looking for information on moving to Tassie and looking to find freight companies etc. Like the post on who not to use, keep tht one off the list. My wife & I are currently selling our house in Sydnay and getting out of the 9 to 5, though it is more like 7 to 7 rat race. We have not yet decided on where to go though we are looking in either the Huon area or in the North West, which is my preference as I luv the scenery and especially the Cradle area. Would be happy for anyone to comment on the pro's/con's of each area.

Looking forward to getting back into my photography and fishing both of which have been in mothballs due to work over the past few years, just been to get used to my new digital SLR & also loose the sloppy back cast on the fly rod as trees do not make that good eating, nor does my hat tongue.gif

I have loaded a couple of photo's from my last trip to Cradle Mountain and will lob up a few more later.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum and soon to Tassie. I'm biased as I live on the north west coast. It doesn't get as cold as down south and its not really that far from the top to the bottom, only 3 hours.

Welcome, nice to see you posting.

Both areas you are looking at are nice. North West is probably a bit more conservative (commonly known as "the bible belt"), while the Huon region tends to have more artistic type people, and so can be a little alternative. Plenty of good fishing no matter where you are in the State though, and one certainly does not have to travel far for good photography.

I originally escaped Sydney in 1997 and spent 6 months here, before being forced back for economic reasons. Never could get this place out of my head after that though. No way I would consider returning to the madness of smog munching, no matter how much I was offered now.

Took a look at your shots in the gallery. Looks like it must have been a touch cold last time you visited smile.gif I love the snow. Days when I wake to see snow on the mountain that peers in my bedroom window are kind of special in some way.

You suggest you are still trying to get used to your new camera, so may I suggest you check your white balance settings? Noticing a slight blue cast over the images, which is most likely the white balance. How on earth did you manage to get a platypus in that position? Almost looks as though it was approaching you, and those critters are generally as shy as anything.

Look forward to seeing you around the place.

Hello,

I will admit that since my first trip to Tassie I have taken very much to it. Good to know about the various regions, thank you.

Yes, I am still finding my way around my camera, just need to figure out where it all is as it has so many options, founds some good info on youtube so will be using that as well. Got to know my film camera well but hey I have to admit I like the digital more as I can see what I am getting. That little guy was wandering right to us in the late afternoon not far from the boardwalk on the North Walk and was only about 5 minutes from the road in a little rivulet. He was not shy at all whiihc was surprising and let us get very close to him.

Amazing. I have seen these guys dive for cover at the slightest noise.

They have their own personalities Anna. Some are shy, others less so. If this little fellow was near a boardwalk, he may have become accustomed to the presence of humans and be less easily scared off. I've had close encounters with individuals at close quarters at both Mount Field and the Salmon Ponds, each places heavily visited. Like you, I've also seen some disappear at the slightest provocation, but others may be quite content to go about their business. I think they're the most fascinating creature we have in Australia (with the possible exception of homo sapiens I guess!).

Great photo Shane! Brilliant really. Well done, I'm officially jealous.

Don't give up on your film camera either, Shane. The lack of instant feedback does not have to be the hindrance it might seem. They are fabulous for encouraging discipline, good composition and get you thinking about exposure - all of which translates directly to digital.

Cheers,
Brett

Hi,
My family moved down to Hobart 4 years ago from Leichhardt.

My advice is to go where you can earn a living! Simple yes, but it can be hard to earn a shekel down here that's for sure.

If that is no concern, remember that wherever you go you will inevitably put down roots before long, especially with kids, so choose wisely unless you don't mind pulling up regularly.

Best of Luck

Kurt

Well it has been a while since I posted.

They say it is hard to get back into the sydney Realestate market after you get out - they do not say how difficult it is to just GET OUT :-)

It has taken us 6 months to sell our house but finally we have. We have also bought a very nice 12.5 acre farm in Dover. We just returned from picking up the keys and are now in full packing mode. It never ceases to amaze me how small this world is, I met the previous owners of the house we bought the other day and as soon as I saw the guy I knew him from my childhood back here in Sydney, used to run the local bike shop, which was 25 years ago.

Anyway am looking forward to getting to Tassie and getting this farm up and running. Work wise, I am hoping my company will have P/T work for me at their Hobart office but no matter if not as I hear Tadies are needed and I can always go back to that or teach at a college as I did P/T here.

ALso looking forward to getting my camera's out again and getting some great shots - I know there are some brillaint photographers here and I would like to mention that this site has a yearly photo comp (all legit) that I am certain from the shots I have seen would get up there with the rest - http://www.photoradar.com

Anyway back to packing and I will be a little more regular on here now that things are movign again.

Thanks for the progress report Shane, good luck with the move and look forward to seeing you around a bit more often. I've had a quick look at the site, looks pretty cool, I'll go back and have a better look when I'm not so busy. :)

Glad to here things are moving ahead for you Shane. Dover is a nice area and you should have no trouble finding lots of great stuff to put those cameras to good use with. Look forward to seeing you around more often and to your photo's.
